The 2004 corvette was offered with a special edition called the Commemorative Edition. The Commemorative Edition was to signify the Corvette race team winning first and second at Le mans in 2003. The coupe and convertible Commemorative Edition's were designated Z15 which came with the special Le mans blue paint and shale interior. These cars also came with special emblems distinguishing them as the 24 hours of Le mans package.
The Z16 package was the high performance commemorative corvette popularly known as the Z06. The Z06 package is a special suspension package that comes with the LS-6 motor producing 405 horsepower. In addition to the Le mans blue paint and special badging like the Z15, the Z16 came with improved shocks, ebony interior, silver racing stripes, polished aluminum rims, and a carbon fiber hood. The carbon fiber hood on the Z16 was the first body panel to ever be offered by any production car company. Carbon fiber has become cutting edge in the race industry due to its light weight and strength. By adding the carbon fiber hood, GM reduced the Z06 weight by 50 lbs. There were only 2025 Z16 corvettes produced in 2004 making these cars scarce on the highway.
The Z16 was also used by GM for two other corvette packages. In 1996, the corvette Grand Sport in which only 1,000 cars were built and the latest Grand Sport model which are sold today but have much greater numbers.
